We are astounded at all the offers of help we've been getting. A lot of people have asked what kinds of meals the kids like and will eat. So this should help people with some food ideas.
**Most important note: Grace is severely allergic to garlic. She also reacts to tree nuts: hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc. Peanuts are fine. She is sensitive to "unbaked eggs" like french toast, scrambled eggs, hard boiled, quiche, furtatas etc. Eggs baked into casseroles or baked goods are fine (something about the long intense heat takes out the proteins that bother her).**
Most store made sauces, especially tomato sauces, BBQ, steak sauce, etc have dehydrated garlic or garlic powder. Some vegetable flavored crackers and chips have garlic ingredients. Most breaded items (chicken nuggets) have garlic powder, although there are several brands of chicken nuggets (including McDonalds) and potatoes (Oneda smiles and restaurant fries) that don't. The small can of plain Hunts tomato sauce doesn't have garlic either, but it's the only brand and specific can I've found that doesn't. Some ketchups, mustards, and pickles do, although we keep garlic free condiments in the house already. Treenuts are usually found in nut breads and some granola bars. If you make something from store bought ingredients, frozen meals, or delivered take-out, please make sure there are NO garlic, tree nut, or uncooked egg ingredients. I know this is a hard adjustment to work around, but it's very important. We don't want an ER trip during the next few weeks.
Our kids eat the typical kid stuff:
noodles
rice
beans
chicken (deli sliced, roasted, pulled, etc)
ham in various forms (deli meat, hamloaf, ham steak)
turkey burgers
fruits (avoid citrus please, gives Ellie a rash)
some veggies (bell peppers and carrots)
applesauce and yogurt
all kinds of cheeses; sliced, string, shredded
homemade pizza for kids (or delivery for the adults)
LOVE fresh bread, home made or bakery
dessert goods (pudding, cookies, etc)
Types of meals we have often:
tacos and/or quesadillas
chicken casseroles (campbells cream of chicken is garlic-free)
grilled cheese
turkey burgers
mac & cheese
spaghetti and meatballs
nuggets and fries
pizza (english muffins or small soft tortilla shells work well for homemade)
deli sandwiches
roasted chicken or turkey
brinner - turkey bacon, pancakes, etc (no sausage)
Thank you for the offers. It means a lot to us. It will really help Charles to not worry about cooking meals when he gets home from work, or for whoever is caring for the kids next week to focus on the kids and not the cooking.
